To anyone who's struggled with Addiction, Bad decision making, Difficult childhood...etc. this book covers it all. It shows you no matter how hard life gets you could still get through it, but you need to have an iron will and an insane believe in your ability. Josh was and will always be an inspiration to me. R.I.P Josh <3
I personally knew Josh and his book is raw, real, and I highly recommend it. It was hard to put down once I started reading it. This book is inspiring among other things. It was amazing to read about how he overcame so many struggles in life, yet he continued to reach for the dreams/goals that he wanted in life. Rest In Peace, Josh. I miss you every day. #SammanSmashTheWorld
I didn't know what to expect before reading. Hard to put down once I began. I was personally familiar with many of the characters in the book since I share a hometown with Josh, that is what lead me to buy the book.... curiosity. I was enthralled with what he went through in his life...some circumstantial, some self-induced. I was particularly taken by the response of "Isabel's" family and how they embraced Josh, and how he was able to rebound from the very bottom. RIP Josh, you left the world a better place by your participation and presence.
I purchased the Housekeeper to read on my way to Europe. I was hesitant to start a new book on a long plane ride. However I wasn't disappointed reading this memoir was like reading two suspense novels simultaneously. The memoir brilliantly describes the agonizing pain of losing your soul mate. It creeps right down to your core and touches the place you bury your deepest darkest pains. Anyone who has ever felt alone in losing their soul mate can relate too. At times the story is dark and brutally honest. The way he paints his love will automatically make you like her. You don't have to be an MMA fan to enjoy the story but if you are you're in for a very delightful read. This memoir left me thinking about different perspectives and ideas of enlightenment and eagerly wanting the writer to just believe in something more. The struggle, dreams and the goals this book had it all and will leave you wanting just one more page.
You can't prepare yourself for this. From one page to the next, the variety of emotions fills page after page of a man exposing every ounce of his life journey/ circumstances. He is an honorable human being to share his heartfelt reality. Indulging in this memoir in just a few days, it's captivating, raw and will make a difference for someone who least expects it.
To be frank, this is the first book I've read in a long time. With the internet being so accessible, I haven't felt an urge to pick a book up in years. However, after reading about Josh's tragic story a few years back, when I learned he was releasing of memoir, I knew instantly that this would be something I would be looking to read.
Samman keeps things fresh by flipping each chapter back & forth between his youth and his more recent years, and each time finish one chapter, you instantly want to read through the following chapter, just so you can find out what happens next. Doing this back & forth motion is what caused me to finish this book much quicker than I had hoped (seeing as how I wanted this book to read on the beach. No bother.)
As the cover states, the book covers love, death & MMA; fortunate for me, as this is a perfect storm of elements to keep me engaged in a narrative. Unfortunate, however, is the grim outcome of the story. We are treated to a cleverly penned memoir by a man with a heavy heart, and a story to tell. I feel almost blessed that Josh was brave enough to share this story with the world, and I feel that I've learned more about the world around us while breezing through his tumultuous tale. Now if only I can find another book that will grip me as hard...
Josh Samman is so much more than just a Mixed Martial Artist; he is a poet, a musician, an extremely intellectual person, a man with an iron will, and above all he is a compassionate soul. This book is so much more than just a book about a UFC fighter.
Men and woman both will enjoy the tales of this incredible man's journey, and what it feels like to have truly loved someone and lose them too soon in life. How do you explain to someone that you love them and how much you appreciate them being in your life? Josh lived that, and this book will forever make that memory and experience live on.
